8 Days in Portugal: Lisbon, Porto and the Douro Valley
This is the classic north and south pairing with the Douro Valley added at the end. The Douro is the reason many people come back to Portugal: terraced vineyards falling into a slow river, and some of the best views in the country.

Day by day
Day 1
Settle into your hotel and take things easy after your journey. Step out into the lively Baixa district for a gentle stroll through Praca do Comercio, where Tagus River breezes help you shake off any travel tiredness. Stop for a coffee or a sweet pastel de nata at a sidewalk cafe before heading back. Your late afternoon and evening remain completely free so you can adjust to local time.
Day 2
Spend your morning wandering the hilly alleys of Alfama and taking in sweeping views across terracotta rooftops from the Miradouro das Portas do Sol. You can easily stroll past Lisbon Cathedral and pause at the Miradouro de Santa Luzia to sit beside the tiled gardens. By mid afternoon, the schedule is clear for you to browse local shops in Chiado or simply unwind on a sunny plaza. Enjoy a relaxed evening discovering neighborhood dining spots at your own pace.
Day 3
Head into the Sintra hills to explore the colorful terraces and parklands of Pena Palace. Afterwards, make your way to the wild headland of Cabo da Roca to stand at continental Europe’s westernmost edge. Drive back along the ocean through the charming coastal town of Cascais, where you might take a short stroll along the bay. You will be back in Lisbon with the late afternoon completely free to rest before dinner.
Day 4
Travel north with a leisurely stop in the walled village of Obidos to walk along the cobblestone main street and sample local sour cherry liqueur. Continue to the fishing town of Nazare to look out over the giant surf break from the clifftop neighborhood of Sitio. Arrive in Porto with plenty of daylight remaining for an easy check in. Your late afternoon is entirely open to unpack and settle into northern Portugal without any rush.
Getting around: Days like these are much easier with a private driver. Portugal Magik, the local partner we recommend, can handle luggage, timings and stops along the way, so you are not driving unfamiliar roads or chasing train connections.
Day 5
Begin along the vibrant riverfront promenade of Ribeira before walking across the lower deck of the Dom Luis I bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia. Head into a historic wine lodge for a tasting of aged tawnies and rubies from the Douro. You can ride the Gaia cable car for lovely river views on your way back across the water. Leave the late afternoon completely free to explore riverside cafes or relax at your hotel.
Day 6
Journey into the heart of wine country along winding roads lined with terraced vineyards. Stop at a traditional wine estate for a tasting and an easy walk through the grounds. Drive up to the quiet Casal de Loivos viewpoint to take in one of the grandest river panoramas in the entire valley. Check in to your valley base, leaving the late afternoon free to sit outdoors and enjoy the quiet scenery.
Day 7
Wake up to an unhurried morning and consider boarding a traditional wooden rabelo boat in Pinhao for a scenic hour on the water. Take a brief wander through the Pinhao railway station to admire its hand-painted blue tiles depicting historic harvest scenes. Return early for a peaceful late afternoon at your hotel surrounded by vine-covered hills. End the day with a relaxed dinner overlooking the river as the sun sets.
Day 8
Savor a slow final breakfast with views over the valley before checking out. Make the straightforward drive back toward Porto, perhaps pausing for a quick coffee in Amarante along the way. Arrive in good time for your flight home, or enjoy a free late afternoon in the city if you have an evening departure. Your trip wraps up smoothly with pleasant memories of your time in Portugal.
Local tip
Book Douro hotels early for September. Harvest weeks fill up months ahead.
Making it your own
Treat this as a starting point. Every day can be swapped, shortened or stretched. Most travellers keep the bases and change the day trips. Keep driving legs under about two and a half hours and leave the late afternoon free, and the trip will feel easy.
