Day by day
Day 1
Land in Lisbon and take your time settling into your hotel after the flight. Step out for a gentle walk through the nearby streets to get your bearings and enjoy your first pastel de nata at a corner bakery. By the late afternoon, your schedule is completely open to rest, sit at a sunny terrace on Praca do Comercio, and unwind before dinner.
Day 2
Spend the morning wandering the cobbled hills of the Alfama district, taking in sweeping river views from Miradouro de Santa Luzia. Wander down toward bustling Baixa before browsing the historic bookshops and relaxed cafes around Chiado. The late afternoon is left wide open, giving you plenty of free time to sit outdoors with a cool drink and watch the iconic yellow trams roll past.
Day 3
Head west along the Tagus River to admire the intricate stone facade of Jeronimos Monastery and stop by the historic Belem Tower nearby. Pick up warm custard tarts fresh from the oven at the famous Pasteis de Belem before taking a slow stroll along the waterfront promenade. You will have the entire late afternoon free to rest, read in the shade, or simply potter around at your own pace.
Day 4
Make the short journey to Sintra to see the colorful exterior and forested grounds of Pena Palace up in the cool hills. Afterwards, trace the dramatic Atlantic coast to stand at the windswept cliffs of Cabo da Roca before pausing in the seaside town of Cascais. You will be back with a completely free late afternoon, perfect for kicking back at a cafe or relaxing at your hotel.
Getting around: Days like these are much easier with a private driver. Portugal Magik, the local partner we recommend, can handle luggage, timings and stops along the way, so you are not driving unfamiliar roads or chasing train connections.
Day 5
Travel south across the rolling cork oak plains of the Alentejo region, breaking the drive with a relaxed lunch stop in a traditional town like Evora or Alcacer do Sal. Taste classic regional bread stews or grilled pork before continuing the journey down toward the southern coast. Arrive at your Algarve base with a free late afternoon ahead, giving you time to unpack and catch the golden sunset over the cliffs.
Day 6
Dedicate the morning to the golden sands of a classic Algarve cove like Praia da Marinha or Praia da Falesia. Walk along the scenic clifftop paths or dip your toes into the clear Atlantic shallows without any rush. Your late afternoon is entirely free to lounge poolside, read a book, or enjoy an unhurried cold drink as the heat of the day softens.
Day 7
Explore the cobbled maritime center of Lagos in the morning before checking out the dramatic sea arches and rock stacks at Ponta da Piedade. Continue westward to the wild, windswept headland of Sagres to look out over the vast ocean where the European continent ends. Return to your base with a free late afternoon to shower, rest, and wander quietly along the local harbor.
Day 8
Drive east to explore the graceful town of Tavira, renowned for its Roman bridge and charming whitewashed houses along the Gilao River. Take a peaceful walk nearby along the edges of the Ria Formosa lagoon to spot wading flamingos and quiet salt pans. Head back with the late afternoon completely free, allowing you to pack your bags at leisure and savor a calm final evening on the coast.
Day 9
Enjoy a quiet morning breakfast with fresh Portuguese bread and coffee as your coastal getaway comes to a close. Take one last walk along the beach or pick up any final souvenirs from a local market before heading toward Faro Airport or traveling back up to Lisbon. If you have an evening flight, you will have a free late afternoon to relax and make your journey home at an easy pace.
Local tip
The western Algarve has more dramatic cliffs. The east has calmer water and is better for swimming.
Making it your own
Treat this as a starting point. Every day can be swapped, shortened or stretched. Most travellers keep the bases and change the day trips. Keep driving legs under about two and a half hours and leave the late afternoon free, and the trip will feel easy.
