Day by day

Day 1

Arrive in Lisbon and settle into your hotel before stepping out for a relaxed orientation walk. Stroll through the wide pedestrian boulevards of the Baixa neighborhood and take in the breeze by Praca do Comercio on the edge of the Tagus river. Keep your late afternoon free to rest, sip an espresso at an outdoor cafe, or adjust to the local rhythm at your own pace.

Day 2

Start your morning exploring the winding alleys of Alfama, where laundry hangs from balconies and cobbled lanes reveal glimpses of the river. Wander up toward Miradouro de Santa Luzia or Miradouro das Portas do Sol to take in sweeping views over terracotta rooftops. Leave your late afternoon completely open to wander through Chiado or sit in a shaded square with a pastry.

Day 3

Head out early to explore the colorful terraces and whimsical towers of Pena Palace set high in the forested Sintra hills. Afterward, take a leisurely drive toward the Atlantic coast to catch the brisk ocean air at Cabo da Roca or along the golden sands of Guincho beach. Your late afternoon remains free to wander Cascais or return to Lisbon for a slow, quiet evening.

Day 4

Travel north from Lisbon and spend your morning walking inside the historic white-walled village of Obidos. Continue to Alcobaca to see the soaring Gothic architecture and dramatic royal tombs inside the famed Alcobaca Monastery. By late afternoon, arrive in the Coimbra area with plenty of free time to settle in and enjoy a peaceful local dinner.

Day 5

Begin your day at the historic hilltop grounds of Coimbra University, exploring the grand central courtyard overlooking the Mondego River. Step inside the gilded, baroque wonders of the Joanina Library to see its floor-to-ceiling wooden bookshelves and historic academic setting. Your late afternoon is totally free to browse the shops along Rua Ferreira Borges or relax in the leafy Santa Cruz park.

Day 6

Spend your morning exploring the Convent of Christ in Tomar, or choose a stop at the intricately carved Batalha Monastery along your route north. Marvel at the grand Manueline stonework and serene cloisters before hitting the highway toward northern Portugal. You will reach Porto with a wide-open late afternoon, perfect for checking into your hotel and taking a gentle walk through the neighborhood.

Day 7

Begin your morning gazing at the magnificent blue and white tile panels inside the central Sao Bento railway station. Meander downhill through historic stone alleyways toward the riverside Ribeira district to watch the traditional rabelo boats bobbing along the Douro. Keep the late afternoon free to linger along the waterfront promenade or cross the lower deck of the Dom Luis I Bridge at a relaxed pace.

Day 8

Enjoy an easy morning wandering Porto, or take a short trip to Guimaraes to see its medieval stone core and historic squares. If you head to Guimaraes, wander around Largo da Oliveira before returning to the city by midday. The late afternoon is kept completely free for quiet shopping on Rua de Santa Catarina or watching the sunset over the river.

Day 9

Spend your morning enjoying a final coffee overlooking the Douro River or picking up a fresh pastry at a neighborhood bakery. Take a quiet walk near your hotel to pack and soak up your last glimpses of the city. Keep the late afternoon free to unwind at a sidewalk table before heading to the airport for your departure journey home.

Local tip

The Joanina Library uses timed tickets. Book them a few days ahead in spring and summer.

Making it your own

Treat this as a starting point. Every day can be swapped, shortened or stretched. Most travellers keep the bases and change the day trips. Keep driving legs under about two and a half hours and leave the late afternoon free, and the trip will feel easy.
