Day by day

Day 1

Settle into your hotel and take your first gentle stroll through the central streets around Avenida dos Aliados. Pop into a traditional cafe for a warm pastel de nata and coffee to shake off the journey. You will have plenty of quiet, unstructured time in the late afternoon to unpack, wander at your own pace, or simply watch the city around you.

Day 2

Start the morning wandering past the blue azulejo tiles of Sao Bento Station before heading down toward the bustling riverfront in Ribeira. Cross the lower deck of the Dom Luis I Bridge to admire the classic views back over the colorful stacked houses. You can browse the riverside stalls before enjoying completely free time in the late afternoon to linger over a glass of port by the water.

Day 3

Head north for the morning to wander the medieval center of Guimaraes and take in the historic grounds of the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. Continue toward Braga to see the grand Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary with its famous zigzagging baroque staircase. Your late afternoon remains open and relaxed back in Porto, giving you space to rest your feet or explore quiet neighborhood side streets.

Day 4

Catch the historic tram out to the seaside district of Foz do Douro for an easy morning walk along the ocean promenade. If you fancy fresh grilled fish, wander a little further north toward the fishing docks and wide sandy stretch of Matosinhos. The late afternoon is left entirely free for you to return to the city center, pick up souvenirs, or rest before dinner.

Day 5

Drive east toward the Douro Valley, pausing midway in the riverside town of Amarante to walk across the historic Sao Goncalo bridge. Sample local pastries by the river Tamega before winding through the terraced green hills toward your valley base. The late afternoon is wide open to check in, relax with a book, and soak in the hillside scenery.

Day 6

Spend a peaceful morning exploring a local wine quinta to learn about port production and taste wine among the terraced vineyards. Afterward, drive up to the Miradouro de Sao Leonardo de Galafura for sweeping panoramas across the serpentine river far below. You will have a clear, easy late afternoon to sit on the terrace, unwind, and watch the sun dip behind the ridges.

Day 7

Take this day completely at your own rhythm, perhaps starting with a slow stroll through the sleepy riverside village of Pinhao to admire the tiled train station. You might wander along the quiet waterfront path or relax quietly by your hotel pool. As always, the late afternoon is kept completely free for a quiet nap, some reading, or an unhurried glass of wine.

Day 8

Travel northwest into the lush Minho region, heading straight for the picturesque market town of Ponte de Lima. Stroll across the ancient Roman bridge that crosses the Lima River and amble through the shaded plane trees along the riverbank avenue. Settle into your new base with free time throughout the late afternoon to sip local vinho verde in a quiet square.

Day 9

Spend the morning exploring Viana do Castelo, beginning with a drive or funicular ride up to the Santa Luzia sanctuary for brilliant views over the Atlantic coastline. Head back down to explore the town center and admire the grand Republica square with its Renaissance fountain. The late afternoon gives you open time to wander the nearby coastal sands of Cabedelo or simply relax at a sidewalk cafe.

Day 10

Make the smooth return journey south toward Porto to prepare for your journey home. Depending on your flight schedule, you can enjoy a calm morning coffee and pick up any last tins of sardines or pastries. You will have comfortable free time in the late afternoon before heading to the airport for your departure.

Local tip

Northern summers are milder than the south. Bring a light layer even in July.

Making it your own

Treat this as a starting point. Every day can be swapped, shortened or stretched. Most travellers keep the bases and change the day trips. Keep driving legs under about two and a half hours and leave the late afternoon free, and the trip will feel easy.
