The Alfama Old Quarter of Lisbon, is one of the most popular places in the city, mandatory for anyone visiting Portugal.

Although the itinerary can be adjusted during the day, this is the standard/normal itinerary for 3h total duration (1.8mi):

  • Start the tour at selected meeting point in downtown Lisbon.
  • Visit Sao Domingos Jewish Memorial and Sao Domingos Church. Learn the History behind the middle ages, the Portuguese Inquisition and the Jewish Communities of Lisbon.
  • Head to Rossio Square, the most important square of Lisbon. Stop in front of National Theathre, overlooking Carmo Convent Ruins.
  • Head to Praça do Comercio, crossing the most famous and iconic area of Lisbon, Rua Augusta. Stop at Santa Justa Funicular/Elevator for photos.
  • Sample the famous custart tart at the local pastry shop, Manteigaria.
  • Arrive at Praça do Comercio. Learn the history behind Paço da Ribeira, the former Royal Palace. Breathaking views overlooking the river and the Castle of Sao Jorge.
  • Continue the tour to Alfama, passing by Campo das Cebolas, and Chafariz Del Rei, once a famous fountain of Lisbon.
  • Learn the history of the big earthquake of 1755.
  • Enter in Alfama, through the old Jewish Quarter. Get lost in the narrow streets of Alfama.
  • Continue the tour crossing by the Lisbon Cathedral.
  • If time allows, admire the views over some viewpoints in Alfama.
  • Return to the starting point, and finish tour.
