Jewish Museum of Lisbon (NEW)

After a long wait, and with several problems involved, finally, the new Tikva Jewish Museum of Lisbon will be born!
Initially, the Jewish Museum of Lisbon was expected in Alfama, in the oldest part of the city, very close by to the Jewish Quarter of Alfama.
But, several issues came up. The historical area of the city, with very old buildings, involves a lot of restrictions. The new museum was not following the maximum built area expected for the neighborhood, and a long wait at the courts made the project stop.

Later on, in 2020, the new Jewish Museum of Lisbon found a new home, and will finally be built. In a premium location, will be located in Belem in front of the Belem Tower and the Tejo/Tagus River. With an additional donation of €2 million, the founder of Vanguard Properties, Claude Berda, and his family are the first donors to TIKVA, the Jewish Museum of Lisbon.
“Tikva”, which means hope in Hebrew, will have about 4000sqm of built area. The chosen architect Daniel Libeskind has designed, the Jewish museums of Berlin, San Francisco, and Copenhagen, as well as memorials to the Holocaust in the Netherlands, Canada, the United States, and the World Trade Centre master plan in New York, in collaboration with the architect Miguel Saraiva, founder of the studio Saraiva + Associates.

In the old place in Alfama, will be born a memorial to honor the Jewish Community of Lisbon, showcasing a tolerant and open city to anyone.
Here, you can see the video of the ceremony, launching the first step for the new Lisbon Tikva Jewish Museum, last March 31st, a symbolic date that marks two centuries since the Court of Inquisition was abolished in Portugal.

I hope the museum can be built quickly, so we can soon start visiting with our guests.
